Meatless Friday at Tiendesitas

We have been trying our best to abstain from meat on Fridays for this Lenten season.  Last week, we had McDonalds' Fillet o Fish sandwich for lunch and were already hungry even before our usual 7pm dinner time.  We found ourselves at Tiendesitas and ended up ordering from Claire Dela Fuente Barbeque and Grill.

Chicken and Veggie Stew

A super yummy chicken dish that I'm sure to repeat over and over again. Good with rice and bread.  I can chug down that creamy buttery sauce as if it were soup.  This tastes a lot like Chicken ala King, most probably because they have a lot of similar ingredients.

Yang Chow - amm yang chow food express

Since we weren't sure of the traffic situation near the airport, we decided to eat dinner somewhere near.  We weren't too keen on fastfood and Yang Chow looked promising from the outside.

Racks El Pueblo

Aside from my niece's Glee themed birthday bash, I also attended a baptism/1st birthday celebration at Racks El Pueblo last weekend.

Feast your eyes on this!

Jollibee and a Glee Themed Birthday Bash

Jollibee was on his way out when he saw me taking a paparazzi shot of him so he struck a pose for me.

I was so amused that I wanted a picture with him.  OK fine, I've always wanted one but was too shy to line up with the rest of the kids.

Danggit and Patola

Since today is Ash Wednesday, I was bent on preparing a meatless dinner.  We had the crispy danggit from Cebu (my sister's pasalubong together with the Zubuchon) which I soaked in a lot of vinegar before munching on them.  The fish was addicting but unlike the other dried fish from last week, this one smelled throughout the house even hours after dinner.

I paired the fish with this giant patola.

Yabu: The House of Katsu

A dinner date with my sister at Yabu: The House of Katsu made me see katsu in a whole new light.  Browsing through their menu, I learned that the Japanese term katsu or katsuretsu actually translates to cutlet and "ït generally refers to a sliced piece of meat that is breaded and deep-fried".

Since we weren't super hungry, we decided to share an order of the Hire Set which consisted of 2 pieces of pork tenderloin, rice, miso soup, cabbage, pickles and a fruit bowl.  The breading of the pork tenderloin was crisp and the meat was so soft and juicy.  This paired with the katsu sauce and soft fragrant rice was heaven in my mouth.

Hire (Pork Tenderloin) Set
P365 for 150 grams or P295 for 100 grams
3/4 inch thick and flaky hire (Japanese for pork tenderloin) where the pork has no fat attached to it

The Sizzlin' Pepper Steak

Do these look somewhat familiar?  Nope they're not from that Forest Gump themed restaurant Bubba Gump.  Cute idea, same concept though - flip it over to the Stop sign when you need something and keep it on the Moo-oove sign when you don't.

Tony Roma's

You must bring your hearty appetite when dining at family style restaurants like Tony Roma's.  Servings are humongous and best enjoyed with a big group of people.  They're famous for their ribs which of course we ordered.

The Fish Fillet and Ribs Combo consisted of a half slab of baby back ribs, deep fried fish fillets, a bowl of soup and 2 side dishes.  We opted for the rice and french fries.  Other options were cole slaw, baked potato, ranch style beans, mixed vegetables, roasted garlic green beans and corn on the cob.

Dried Fish and Nilagang Baboy

I've been meaning to try the dried fish my sister brought home from Cebu together with the Zubuchon.

It was raining the whole afternoon last Monday and the air has been pretty chilly.  I cooked nilagang baboy for dinner and thought the fish would be the perfect partner.

The very thin fish wasn't too salty and didn't smell as bad as other dried fish. We dunked most of them in vinegar.  We still have half a pack which we will most likely eat with eggs, tomatoes and onions or maybe tons of veggies.

*Oops!  This isn't the danggit from Cebu.  I just brought home a pack from my parents house and this is a different type of fish.  I forgot the name but I remember buying something like this when we were in La Union.

Cheese the One. The Sour Cream of My Life.

I'm being cheesy because today is V day hahaha.  Granny Goose has come out with new snacks (aka junk food).  We spotted High Rock Potato Crisps at the grocery and grabbed both types off the shelf because of the catchy flavors - I'm not boring, Just plain salted. and Cheese the one.  The sour cream of my life.  These made us smile and want to take them home.  The chips remind me of paper thin and crisp Piatos.  I like the cheese and sour cream more than the plain salted.  Kudos to the awesome minds who came up with the twist on the names of the flavors.

Chic-Boy

We assumed that the house specialties of Chic-Boy Chicken at Baboy would be chicken and pork dishes so we ordered one of each.

Eggplants in Pizza Sauce

I know I have to work on my food styling skills.  This may look like an ugly blob but it tasted surprisingly good for an experimental dish.  Even good enough for my mother in law to tell other people about it!

Mom's Shrimp Dip

For today's afternoon snack, I'm having my mom's famous shrimp dip.  Her labor of love which she serves during potluck parties and sometimes even gives as gifts.  Layers of shrimp, cheese and other wonderful ingredients which she painstakingly slices up and spreads are best eaten with crackers.  Mom serves it with Fita crackers.  I've tried it on Skyflakes, soft tortillas and my favorite nachos.

This is how it looks before everyone else digs in.

Sakae Sushi

We have been frequenting SM Mall of Asia the past couple of months and that revolving sushi bar has always caught our attention.  We finally gave in to our curiosity (and grumbling stomachs) last month and tried Sakae Sushi's all day sushi buffet.

RUB Ribs & BBQ

I've been hearing and reading great reviews of this new place that serves affordable ribs in Quezon City.  We're rarely in that area so we were pretty excited when it opened a branch in Kapitolyo.  We checked out their Pasig branch last month.

Hainanese Delights

Another new alternative to the usual fastfood fare has popped up in our area. I've seen Hainanese Delights in Galleria and I've always been intrigued if it was anything like the Hainanese Chicken I had in Singapore last September.
